Stadtaffe by Peter Fox
The frontman of Seeed's debut solo album. Reggae-spiced orchestral hip hop. Awesome lyrics, very good rhythm and melodies. Recommended tracks : Alles Neu, Lok Auf Zwei Beinen, Stadtaffe.
9. Oracular Spectacular by MGMT
First cd by the New Yorker duo. Airborne floating pop ; unique in its genre. Refreshing, relaxing, makes my mind go blank or brings back memories. Regularly in my player. Recommended tracks : Time To Pretend, 4th Dimensional Transition, Kids.
8. Whatever People Say I Am, That's Why I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys
Most outstanding and unexpected album in the UK last decade. The Monkeys invented their own style, behind Turner's cocky and yet pleasant voice. Other look-alike bands barely managed to deliver pale copies of this one ; even the Monkeys themselves didn't reach that point again. Excellent album. Recommended tracks : I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Still Take You Home, The View From The Afternoon.
7. Stadium Arcadium by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Roughly criticized double cd ; still a very good one to me. Worth a One Hot Minute in my opinion, but this last one ain't in the top because SA really got me into the Chili Peppers, and has got some ass-kicking tracks that I just can't let aside. Enormous emotional wealth. Recommended tracks : Storm In A Teacup, Turn It Again, Wet Sand, Dani California, Especially In Michigan.
6. Inside Of Emptiness by John Frusciante
Probably the style I've preferred throughout my exploration of Frusciante's music. IOE is a masterpiece because of its lyrical and musical content, for instance Look On which reunites John's unique writing ability and guitar playing. To listen from beginning to end, truly homogeneous cd. Recommended tracks : I'm Around, Look On, The World's Edge.
5. Silent Alarm by Bloc Party
Again, a mindblowing debut album. Impressive maturity in the composition. No fanciness, everything's relevant and thought-out ; must have been quite a piece of work. Amazing drums, exemplary vocals, wicked guitar (go Russell) and well-built basslines. Definitely their best album. Recommended tracks : This Modern Love, Banquet, Positive Tension.
4. Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
This one might be one of the simplest albums by the Rhcp, in terms of musical inventivity. No Frusciantesque solos, no slappy bass riffs, nothing really fancy in there ; but, Heaven Almighty! This shit grabs your guts and doesn't let 'em go. AK's lyrics are awesome, and everything around them is a flood of alchemy and talent between the members. They've never written anything more legendary and timeless ; those tracks will stay forever, everyone knows them. Recommended ones : This Velvet Glove, Otherside, Purple Stain, Parallel Universe.
3. Rage Against The Machine by eponymous
Legend. Time will never bring us anything as powerful, meaningful and intense as this first album by Rage Against The Machine. We discover Zack's huge talent at rapping critical lyrics, Morello's crazy guitar experiences, the consciously patterned rhythms carrying their music and, above all, the mushroom cloud of rage. Kicks your butt and makes you clutch your fucking guitar, tune it in D and clean that shit up. Dayum. Recommended tracks : Wake Up, Freedom, Take The Power Back, Know Your Enemy... everything. All songs are epic.
2. Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers
I think it was a tie between this one and the one above (RATM). But my heart made me go for Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the best thing the Chili Peppers have ever recorded. Everything you need's in here : funky riffs, slapped bass lines, wicked solos, flying melodies, amazing lyrics... They're bringing you down all the way to LA. You can feel that strength in the composition, you're witnessing Frusciante's gain of influence, but also this fusion spirit in their minds ; probably the hardest thing to play among their records. Recommended tracks : Sir Psycho Sexy, I Could Have Lied, Give It Away, The Power Of Equality, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Can't describe, I should invent words to depict my feelings when this is rocking my belly.
1. 11:11 by Rodrigo y Gabriela
I've already written so much about that album, can't be asked. Just one thing : this is the best music I've ever heard, the most versatile and complete cd in the world. It is worth a motherfucking RHCP album. It takes out places you didn't even know about ; Rodrigo's catchy riffs take Gab's rythmics' place, and the alchemy between the two is just wonderful. Everything's good in it, so I recommend the whole thing. But Hanuman and Santo Domingo are good starters.
• Song for the dead - QOTSA
• First impressions of earth - The strokes
• Electric ladyland - Jimi Hendrix
• One hot minute - Rhcp
• Louise attaque - éponyme
• A weekend in the city - Bloc party
• Hot fuss - The killers
• The empyrean - John Frusciante
• Appetite for destruction - Guns n roses
