Cordless Drill Comparison

Cordless drills are the best friend of many DIY-ers. They are compact, powerful, and convenient to carry around-- what’s not to love?

In this article, we will compare cordless drills with two other most common tools in construction work: an impact driver, and a corded drill.

Cordless drills vs. Impact driver

Both of these tools look like a gun, with a ratcheting chuck in front for tugging in the drill bits and which spins in circular motion to dig holes or to drive in screws. Both of them have handles that you can easily clutch onto, and both run on battery. And yet, there are several key differences that not everyone is aware of.

Cordless drill

Cordless drills have two main functions: creating holes and driving in bits.

Cordless drills can work with various types of bits, ranging in shapes and sizes. Cordless drills are great for creating holes because they spin in a constant and fast motion. This produces powerful torques that let the bits slice in easily into woods, thereby creating a solid hole for containing screws and fasteners.

While top rated cordless drills are great for digging holes, they are not the best for driving in fasteners. The reason is that the spinning motion is much too steady that it fails to adjust force when required. For example, when driving into a hard piece of woods, cordless drills just spin and spin without adding the extra force required to break through the hard layer. The same is true the other way around: when softer woods appear, they also lack the sensitivity needed to lower the power to avoid breaking the woods.

Impact Drivers

Impact Drivers have only one function: driving in fasteners. They are not great for digging holes because of the technology that allows them to sense and adjust force. Drilling holes needs constant and even force as supplied by standard drills, whereas impact drivers reduce or increase force according to the softness of the surface. Plus, since their main function is driving in fasteners, creating holes requires an extra set of bits that you will have to buy separately.

As implied, impact drivers sense resistance. When driving into soft materials like styrofoam or soft woods, the drill would spin evenly. Yet, when resistance increases, the motor switches to a more powerful mode that breaks the force into multiple bursts that allow the drill to hammer forcefully into the surface. As a result, you don’t have to press as hard on impact drivers because the machine automatically transfers the force from your arms into the drill bit - something that even the best cordless power drill cannot do.

So what is the main advice? Since cordless drills produce constant torque, they are better for drilling holes and for driving in bits on softer surfaces. Impact drivers are smarter and can drive in bits on harder surfaces more beautifully.

Cordless vs. corded drills

Between cordless and corded drill, the main difference is mobility and convenience.

While corded drills run on electricity, cordless drills run on batteries, mostly lithium-ion batteries. Corded drills are more traditional tools, so you are tethered to an outlet when you use them. Plus, the cords are usually not very long, thereby restricting the distance that you can carry them. Cordless drills are, on the other hand, easily carried around as long as it’s in full battery.

Corded drills also have less power modes than the more modern cordless counterparts, allowing you less flexibility. But, that also means they are cheaper in price.
